History of Art 2 (U02125)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : ACE-2-U02125 History of Art 2 is designed as a two-semester course that builds on the knowledge and skills of students who already possess a basic familiarity with the discipline. It examines the visual arts from 1700 to the present, and aims to develop more sophisticated skills of art-historical interpretation and to prepare students for the intellectual demands of 3rd and 4th year Honours teaching. Each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course (BY VISITING STUDENTS ONLY). The first semester (History of Art 2A: Art for the Elite and the Bourgeoisie) examines western art of recent centuries (from 1700 to 1900) within its wider social and political context. Classes at the end of the semester consider the methods and concepts especially relevant to the study of this material. The second semester (History of Art 2B: The Globalization of Art) focuses on art from 1900 to the 21st century. Classes at the end of the semester consider the methods and concepts especially relevant to the study of this material. History of Art 2 consists of two semester units but each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course (BY VISITING STUDENTS WHO ARE VISITING FOR ONE SEMESTER ONLY). The objective of the course is to enhance the knowledge and skills of students who already possess a basic familiarity with the discipline, and to broaden their knowledge of the history of art. Overall, the four semesters of History of Art 1 and History of Art 2 have both a consistency in the structure of the teaching and a sense of intellectual development. Together they prepare students for the demands of more specialized 3rd and 4th-year Honours teaching in the History of Art.
Assessment Information
One Essay in each Semester (30%), Presentation and Contribution to seminars(20%) and one three-hour Degree Examination in the May diet (50%).
