Critical Development Studies: Power, Knowledge and Capitalism (U03223)

This course examines critical approaches to Third World development studies. We will trace the various theoretical underpinnings of development studies and how they have changed over the past 20-30 years. Emphasis is placed on understanding how capitalism and neo-colonialism has shaped the kinds of development projects that have emerged. Examples will be drawn from all over the world with a particular emphasis on South Asia. The course will conclude by examining neo-liberalism and the impact this has had on development over the past 10-15 years.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- To explore the problems and successes of development in different parts of the world.
- To familiarise students with critical approaches to development studies.
- To understand the importance of theory in shaping approaches to development.
- To explore how development is linked to capitalist economies globally.

Assessment Information

Class assessment: As outlined in course handbook.

Degree assessment: One 2,000 word degree essay (40%) plus One two hour examination (2 questions) (60%)
