Critical Development Studies: Power, Knowledge and Capitalism (U03223)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-3-DEVSTUD This course examines critical approaches to Third World development studies. We will trace the various theoretical underpinnings of development studies and how they have changed over the past 20-30 years. Emphasis is placed on understanding how capitalism and neo-colonialism has shaped the kinds of development projects that have emerged. Examples will be drawn from all over the world with a particular emphasis on South Asia. The course will conclude by examining neo-liberalism and the impact this has had on development over the past 10-15 years. Entry RequirementsSubject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Degree assessment: One 2,000 word degree essay (40%) plus One two hour examination (2 questions) (60%) Exam times
