Uneven Development (U01271)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-3-UNEVENDEV This course examines the theory and practice of global development since World War II. It considers how development problems and solutions are conceptualised (and asks why that matters), it reviews the state policies through which semi-peripheral and peripheral countries are attempting to develop, it examines the crucial development challenges, obstacles and constraints facing those countries, and it looks at some provocative but less orthodox approaches to development. Course aims:
-to outline how the geography of the world economy is being changed by processes of globalisation and flows of trade, finance and multinational investment. -to consider the implications of these changes in the global political economy for economic growth and the political economies of developing countries. -to focus in particular on the process of economic liberalisation and to understand its rationale, causes and its consequences. -to understand the regulatory problems posed by the contemporary form and instability of the world economy and to consider the implications for the economics of development.
