To introduce students to the rich possibilities of exploring this vivid period of Scottish History through some of the major Scottish literary texts of the day and to analysing literature as historical sources from poetry to prose to political theory relating to the period 1450-1650.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After completing the course students should:

• Have been introduce to and engaged with a selection of important texts relating to the history of the period.
• Have considered critically the use of literature as a historical source.
• Have acquired insights into the major political and religious issues in Scottish History during the period 1450-1650.
• Have developed skills in presentation, oral argument and essay-writing.

Assessment Information

Students will be required to submit one individual essay of 3000 words and will sit a Degree Examination in the May diet. The essay will count as one third of the final grade; the exam as two thirds. The Course Organiser will keep regular consultation hours. Individual tutorials will be made available to students as required.
