Neronian and Flavian Epic (U03341)

This course introduces students to important texts in Roman poetry of the first century AD. It involves the reading of a selection of passages from the extant epics of the Neronian and Flavian eras: Lucan's "Bellum Civile", Valerius Flaccus' "Argonautica", Silius Italicus' "Punica", and Statius' "Thebaid" and "Achilleid". It uses H. M. Currie's Silver Latin Epic (Bristol Classical Press) as a textbook.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A Pass in Latin 2A and Latin 2B, or equivalent experience at the discretion of the course organiser.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will:-
- have developed a familiarity with Neronian and Flavian Epic poetry;
- have some knowledge of its themes;
- have a good knowledge of its language and style.

Transferable skills:-

- analytical skills,
- ability to deal independently with a complex body of information,
- ability to produce a concise summary.

Assessment Information

Continuous Assessment - 30% (one essay worth 20% and seminar/class preparation worth 10%);
One (2-hour) Degree Examination - 70%.
