East Asian Civilization 1 (U01826)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : LLC-1-EAC

East Asian Civilization 1 presents a broad outline of historical change in China, Japan and, to a lesser degree, other parts of East Asia. Students will be introduced to the most important characteristics of traditional society and intellectual life, including the literature and art of China and Japan. For intending Honours students in Chinese and Japanese, East Asian Civilization 1 serves as a complement to the elementary language courses giving the students an essential background for the texts studied in the Honours years. For those students who do not study Chinese and Japanese, the course provides an insight into cultures that in many respects differ fundamentally from Western civilization. The course also aims to give a better understanding of the social and cultural origins of the nations of East Asia.
