Music 1A: Music in Social Contexts (VS1) (U01130)

This course examines the various roles played by music in societies, both Western and non-Western, and in social structures within those societies. The course will range over the full period of music history and will include discussion of issues in contemporary art music and in popular musical culture.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will have become familiar with a variety of social contexts in which music has played and plays an important role.
- They will examine the music written for these contexts and its relationship to those commissioning, performing and hearing it.
- They will have become familiar with issues in contemporary culture and in contemporary approaches to writing about music and its history.

Assessment Information

One coursework submission c.2,000 words (40%) and one 2-hour examination (60%).
