The course will range over the full period of music history and will include discussion of issues in contemporary art music and in popular musical culture.

- Students will have become familiar with a variety of social contexts in which music has played and plays an important role.
- They will examine the music written for these contexts and its relationship to those commissioning, performing and hearing it.
- They will have become familiar with issues in contemporary culture and in contemporary approaches to writing about music and its history.
