German for Scientists (Level 1) A (GE0003)

A course for beginners with no previous knowledge of German, designed to introduce the German Language to students in the College of Science and Engineering. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of German. The numbers admitted to this course are limited, therefore Directors of Studies should contact the Department of European Languages and Cultures' Teaching Office to confirm availability before registering students for this course. The examination will consist of a two-hour written paper.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : No previous knowledge of German is required

? Prohibited combinations : GE0004

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and Directors of Studies must contact the Teaching Office of the Division of European Languages and Cultures (59 George Square) before enrolling students. (Telephone : 50 4026).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will develop basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. They will acquire knowledge of basic grammatical structures and a vocabulary of approximately 500 high-frequency words and phrases.

Assessment Information

One homework assignment, one class test, four vocabulary tests, oral proficiency. Class work 50%; degree exams 50%.
