| Summary | An introductory course on audible acoustic waves in air, and of the vibration of simple systems including strings, bars and membranes, as well as acoustic tubes.
 |
| Course description | The course consists of two parts: a lectured technical/mathematical component (weeks 1-8), and a hands-on practical component (weeks 9-12). In the first part of the course there are eight lectures and eight tutorials that cover a range of topics related to vibration and sound. In the second part of the course, during the final few weeks of teaching, you will undertake work on a short project, involving the analysis of room impulse responses. |

Learning Outcomes
| On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
        1.	Demonstrate familiarity with the wave equation for string vibration and traveling wave decompositions.2.	Demonstrate familiarity with the equation of motion of a vibrating bar and with the equation of motion of a vibrating membrane.3.	Derive expressions for modal shapes and frequencies for simple systems and calculate expressions for phase and group velocity for a given system.4.	Demonstrate familiarity with the three-dimensional linear acoustic wave equation, including the assumptions and approximations made in its derivation.5.	Evidence an understanding of the basic principles of room acoustics, including the analysis of impulse response measurements. |
