| Summary | This course focuses on representations and perceptions of gender, sexuality and the body in medieval England and France. Seminars will address the following themes: motherhood and the maternal; gender and sexuality in celibate communities; monsters and the monstrous; masculinity and warfare; flesh vs. spirit; metaphorical vs. actual; fetish; fragmentation and the gaze. While we will explore multiple approaches to these issues, emphasis will be placed on interweaving the following three strands: the art object, historical context and theory. |

Learning Outcomes 
| On completion of this course, the student will be able to: 
        Analyse artworks within specific theoretical discussions of the body, maternity, monstrosity, queer theory, post-colonialism, materiality, performance and the gaze.Explain signficant shifts in social, political and theological perceptions of gender.Exemplify specific approaches to gender through specific case studies.Demonstrate an understanding of the historical and art historical contexts of various case studies.Explain significant developments in gender literature, theories and methodologies applicable to medieval studies from the 1980s until present. |
