- In-depth knowledge of a recent intellectual debate in the field of Geography and related spatial and environmental sciences
- Ability to research a specific field, with view to providing an intellectual historiography of that field
- Ability to read critically and to synthesise ideas from a range of sources
- Ability to synthesise and critically analyse a range of debates, in written and verbal form
