    By the end of the course, students should be able to: 
- show an understanding of the aims and methods of dialectologists 
- understand how results from dialectological surveys are of relevance to other aspects of linguistic enquiry (e.g. historical linguistics and linguistic theory) 
- conduct a small scale dialectological survey of their own
