| Summary | This course discusses the salient features of the mystical dimension within Islam and covers the historical background of the tradition and the foremost personalities who played a major role in its development. Moreover, it will examine the primary concepts promoted in Sufism and their manifestation, in both a religious and social context, through translations of the classical works that present both Sufi theory and practice. |

Learning Outcomes 
    On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
    
        - Students will acquire a good knowledge of the history of Islamic mysticism.
 - Students will develop a good understanding of key mystical concepts, controversies and debates, and of their broader religious an intellectual contexts.
 - Students will become familiar with Islamic mysticism's social and literary manifestations.
 - Students will learn critically to examine and interpret historical materials.
 - Students will learn to read and understand various types of Sufi texts in translation.
