| Course description | 'The Scope of Literature:  the study of a range of literature written between 1700 and 1950, with an emphasis on 1)literary kinds, movements and contexts, and 2)a variety of claims regarding literature's capacities and limits.' |

Students will gain an understanding of the historical development of literature within national cultural contexts; a grasp of the development of theoretical approaches to literature and criticism; an understanding of the ways in which literature can be explored through associated disciplines such as history, philosophy, and the literatures of other languages
