Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:

- prepare a mass and heat balance for a continuous process
- select operating conditions and specify and size reactors, heat exchangers and condensers
- prepare and justify schemes for process control and start-up
- complete a preliminary plant layout exercise
- design and execute experiments to test particular relationships or investigate particular phenomena
- use measurement and analytical methods; and be aware of their limitations
- record data and plot appropriately for the relationship being tested
- carry out a concise and informative error analysis
- prepare a concise, complete, readable and properly referenced report
- write an executive summary
- discuss the importance of safety in all aspects of chemical engineering
- describe the principle of Inherent Safety
- define the concepts of Risk and Hazard
- describe the main types of hazard in chemical processes - fire, explosion and toxic release - and state how these hazards may be controlled
- describe the basic elements of Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis
-use Matlab to solve engineering problems.
-Be able to develop simple dynamic models of process
units and solve them using MATLAB.
-Understand the importance of and how to measure
transfer functions.
-Be able to tune a controller.
-Be able to identify possible control loops in chemical
engineering. |
