| Course description | The course begins with a general introduction to the heart, its structure and function. The properties of the different types of cell that make up the heart and how these properties relate to function will be considered.
Specialised topics will then include: The ionic currents responsible for the generation of the cardiac action potential and pacemaker potential, excitation-contraction coupling, pH regulation, arrhythmias, inotropic mechanisms, hypertrophy, heart failure, the control of magnesium and other intracellular ions.
