| Course description | The overall aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the main problems in epistemology and metaphysics. These topics include: defining knowledge, the sources of knowledge, scepticism, the problem of induction, God=s existence, truth, space and time, universals and particulars, causation, realism and antirealism. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
In lectures and small group tutorials, students will:
Have acquired a solid understanding of the basic problems of epistemology and metaphysics. These topics include: defining knowledge, the sources of knowledge, scepticism, the problem of induction, God?s existence, truth,
space and time, universals and particulars, causation, realism and anti-realism.
Have acquired an understanding of the nature of philosophy and an appreciation of the value of characteristically philosophical ways of thinking. |
Assessment Information
1 mid-term essay (1500 words) and 1 exam at the end of the semester.
Coursework counts for 25%; exam for 75%. |
