| Course description | The aim of this course is to study Hellenistic Poetry by examining the works of the period's three major poets: Callimachus, Apollonius and Theocritus.  Particular attention is paid to literary innovations and the interpretive issues that arise from them. |

Information for Visiting Students 
| Pre-requisites | Visiting students should usually have at least 3 courses in Classics related subject matter (at least 2 of which should be in Ancient Greek) at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course.  We will only consider University/College level courses but Elementary or Intermediate Greek courses will not count.  Students beyond Intermediate level but with less Greek than the prerequisite should consider taking either Greek 2A/2B. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes 
On successful completion of the course, students will: 
- have read one book of Apollonius' Argonautica, the 6 Hymns of Callimachus, selected examples of Callimachus' work in other genres, selected Idylls of Theocritus, and selected epigrams in Greek; and the whole of Apollonius' 'Argonautica' in English; 
- have a thorough knowledge of the content of the works read; 
- have a good knowledge of the language and style of the three authors;  
- have a good understanding of the literary innovations, conventions, and characteristics of Hellenistic Poetry; 
- have developed awareness of the interpretive problems raised by hellenistic literary practices and modern critical approaches to those problems; 
- have developed skills in close reading of original texts.

Assessment Information 
Literary Essay/Exercises (30%); 
one (2-hour) Degree Examination (70%). 
 
Part-Year Visiting Student (VV1) Variant Assessment: 
Literary Essay/Exercises (30%); 
a Subject-Area administered Exam/Exercise in lieu of Degree Examination, to take place in Week 12 (see the current course handbook for further details) (70%).
