| Course description | The course aims to provide students with an introduction to early modern Scottish history, between about 1500 and 1750. Lecturing focuses on five themes: Politics, Religion, Government, Economy & Society, and Culture. Weekly tutorials, which supplement the lectures, give opportunities to discuss primary documents and varied scholarly interpretations. The course has a strong comparative element, encouraging students to reflect on early modern Scotland's place in its British and European contexts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course it is intended that students will be able to:
- produce a sound and competent essay, in accordance with the common marking scale;
- produce a sound and competent document/source analysis, in accordance with the common marking scale;
- demonstrate, by way of essay and examination, understanding of key concepts in early modern Scottish history, and the potential and limitations of the evidence relating to it;
- demonstrate the following transferable skills: independent gathering of relevant evidence pertaining to a posed problem; critical consideration of evidence in order to arrive at sound conclusions; evaluating the work of others, including peers; presenting evaluations and conclusions clearly in both written and oral form; independent management of personal timetable, workload and other priorities in order to meet established deadlines.

| 2 essays worth 50% of overall mark, plus a two-hour Degree Examination in the May diet. |
