Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course it is intended that a student should have, or be able to:
1) Explain the principles of interference in both vacuum and dielectric media;
2) Explain the principles of diffraction and the Fourier formulation of diffraction;
3) Experienced the application of interference and diffraction in simple and more complex optical problems;
4) Explain the processes by which x-rays, neutrons and electrons are scattered by condensed matter;
5) State the various formulations of the diffraction of waves by a crystal and demonstrate their equivalence;
6) Derive expressions for the scattering amplitude for simple crystal structures and explain the meanings of the form and structure factor;
7) Explain the meaning and construction of the Brillouin zones of a crystal.
