Course descriptionThis course is not available to University of Edinburgh matriculated students. This is a for-credit course offered by the Office of Lifelong Learning (OLL); only students registered with OLL should be enrolled

Learn the basic concepts of statistics and prepare to study statistics on undergraduate degree programmes such as psychology. Beginning with how to use a scientific calculator, the course moves on to cover mean, median, standard deviation and correlation. Three assessed exercises will enable you to apply what you have learnt.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
* Understand the basic statistical concepts used in the social sciences.
* Be able to use a scientific calculator.
* Interpret statistical data.
* Calculate: mean, median, standard deviation and correlation.
Assessment Information
Open Studies 10 credit courses have one assessment. Normally, the assessment is a 2000 word essay, worth 100% of the total mark, submitted by week 12. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40%. There are a small number of exceptions to this model which are identified in the Studying for Credit Guide.

Syllabus Content of course:
1. Use of scientific Calculator.
2. Evaluation of simple interest/compound interest/mortgage repayment on calculator. Short project set - working out mortgage repayments (return by beginning of week 4).
3. Construction of a frequency table. Construction of a histogram.
4. Evaluation of a mean from frequency distribution. Evaluation and interpretation of standard deviation from a frequency distribution. Construction of a cumulative frequency curve.
5. Finding a median from a cumulative frequency curve. Finding a semi-interquartile range from a cumulative frequency curve.
6. Statistics project set.
7. Evaluation and interpretation of a regression line of the form y=ax+b.
8. Evaluation and interpretation of the Pearson correlation coefficient.
9. Introduction to Normal curve and using it to evaluate probabilities. Homework project set.
10. Questions, finish project. Hand in projects.
