| Course description | This course is designed to explore the emergence of major concepts of film-making in Europe in the 1920s and early 1930s. Students will be introduced to the beginnings of European cinema in the work of the Lumieres, Melies, the Brighton school and early Danish productions. The course will then focus on three developments: Russian cinema and the practice of montage in the films of Eisenstien, Pudovkin and Vertov; German cinema from its expressionist beginnings in Dr. Caligari and Metropolis to Brecht's epic project Kuhle Wampe; the development of early French film style in dadaist and surrealist surroundings in the work of Rene Clair and Bunuel, and in the poetic projects of Vigo. Discussions will involve a variety of topics such as cinema's relation to traditional art-forms and contemporary art movements, the quest for an independent film style, the advance of cinemata technology and the impact of the advent of sound. |
