| Course description | This course presents a broad introduction to Environmental Engineering.  Particular emphasis is given to environmental impact assessment and pollution in air and water systems.  Case studies are employed to illustrate key issues and an Enviromental Impact Assessment is conducted.  Also included is a introduction to U.K. urban drainage design practice. The basic theory required to develop designs is addressed, and a design project is carried out using the WinDES computer software. |

By the end of this course, the student should be able to: 
? understand the basic principles of UK urban drainage design; 
? evaluate alternatives and design a solution to an urban drainage problem requiring storage; 
? identify and understand the application of relevant legislation covering environmental issues; 
? describe the principles and methods of environmental impact assessment; 
? prepare an environmental impact assessment for civil engineering works; 
? describe and apply the fundamentals of air and water pollution to solve basic environmental engineering problems.
