Pain and its Management (U00979)

Aim is to consider pain as part of life and death, and to review its management.

Topics will include basic physiology and pathophysiology of pain, different types of pain, analgesics, drug development, alternative and complementary treatments, psychological aspects, pain management strategies including hospitals and hospices, health economic aspects, ethical and humanity dimensions - including international perspective.

Teaching will be by a variety of specialists giving seminars with active participation by students, and by self-directed learning, group presentations and 1-2 practical sessions (e.g. basic measurements of nociception and pain in volunteers and in patients, subject to ethical approval and availability of medically qualified staff) in a hospital, hospice and/or science laboratory.

? Pre-requisites : Permission of the Curriculum Approval Officer.

? Co-requisites : Pharmacology 3 and Physiology 3 are recommended.

Understanding and communicating the importance of managing acute and chronic pain in a variety of medical situations. Interpreting evidence and appreciation of the scientific, ethical and economic factors and principles underlying pain and its management. Ability to identify areas of ignorance and to advance proposals for the improvement of pain management.
