Postgraduate Course: Basic Sciences in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (VESC11085)
Course Outline
School | Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies |
College | College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine |
Credit level (Normal year taken) | SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) |
Availability | Not available to visiting students |
SCQF Credits | 20 |
ECTS Credits | 10 |
Summary | An extensive knowledge and critical understanding of physiology and pharmacology is essential for providing a high standard of anaesthesia care for patients. This course will build on your pre-existing knowledge and further develop your understanding of both normal and abnormal physiological states and how this impacts anaesthesia. We will also explore how drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics can influence the anaesthesia and analgesia drug choices you make for your patients. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to explore and critically evaluate the relevant peer reviewed publications. |
Course description |
This course will build on pre-existing knowledge in physiology & pharmacology. The areas covered in the course include:

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an extensive knowledge and critical understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of common anaesthetic and analgesic drugs used in veterinary species.
- Apply a critical understanding of how normal and abnormal physiological states, including pain, may influence anaesthetic and analgesic drug selection for veterinary cases.
- Critically review specialist literature, consolidate and extend knowledge and thinking in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia.
