| Summary | The aim of the Academic Surgery course is to support students develop an understanding of the general principles of clinical study design, statistics, and critical review of the medical literature. These core skills will provide a basic understanding of how to undertake and assess the quality of clinical research. |
| Course description |
Through self-directed learning, online content will deliver key concepts relating to study design (formulating a hypothesis and research questions; appropriate methodology to address these questions), critical appraisal (reviewing a paper), and statistics (understanding data; basic principles of statistics). Students will be required to work through weekly online activities, including discussion boards, formative MCQ quizzes, a summative MCQ test, and statistical exercises. Students will submit a written critical appraisal of a set scientific research article.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply general principles of clinical study design, ethics, and statistics
- Translate a clinical research question into a database search strategy
- Appraise the relationship between evidence, audit and observed variation in clinical practice
- Critically assess medical research in order to identity its strengths, weaknesses and how it might be applied in surgical practice
- Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to issues which are at the forefront of scientific and medical research
