Summary | This course presents a number of example surgical cases run in a systematic manner through the systems of the gastrointestinal tract, exploring the applied basic sciences in the context of important clinical presentations. OesophagoGastric (O-G) and Hepato-PancreatoBiliary disease (HPB) are also covered. |
Course description |
Through self-directed learning, online content will deliver key concepts relating to the gastrointestinal system, with particular relevance to Upper GI, Colorectal, and Transplant Surgery. Students will be required to work through weekly online activities, including discussion boards, formative MCQ quizzes and a mini-essay.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relevant basic scientific principles for common surgical procedures relating to diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary and pancreatic conditions, and disorders of the spleen
- Evaluate the anatomy, physiology and pathology underpinning the surgical treatment of diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anal canal
- Deal with complex ethical and professional issues
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues in transplant surgery and organ availability
- Communicate with peers, more senior colleagues and specialists
