Credit level (Normal year taken) | SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) |
Availability | Not available to visiting students |
SCQF Credits | 18 |
ECTS Credits | 9 |
Summary | This course builds on material covered by the students previously in this programme to extend into areas of fire science that underpin common engineering tools and approaches to fire safety problems. The class will explore the combustion processes which underpin our understanding of fire science and explore how canonical problems in fire science are used to understand, in greater depth, the processes of ignition, burning and flame spread. |
Course description |
Thermodynamics and chemical kinetics
Premixed flames
Explosions
Diffusion flames and flame structure
Burning of droplets
Ignition of solids
Flame spread on solids
Fire emissions
Scaling of fires
The students shall also attend a series of research seminars on current themes in fire science and its application and prepare a coursework submission on one of these topics identifying the key relevant fire science concepts and their application.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the heat transfer and combustion chemistry processes associated with ignition, flame spread and burning;
- Formulate solutions to problems of ignition, flame spread and burning using relevant heat transfer and combustion chemistry;
- Apply and appraise calculation methods, with appropriate levels of simplification, for problems related to ignition, flame spread and burning;
- Critically evaluate the breadth of current research topics in fire science & engineering and limitations in current knowledge.
