Summary | This course is the dissertation project element of the MSc programme in Structural and Fire Safety Engineering. The student will contribute an original piece of research on a topic relevant to structural and fire safety engineering. The work undertaken and a critical appraisal of the results will be written up in the dissertation report and presented at the final Poster Day as the culmination of the degree programme. |
Course description |
Students who achieve at least a pass mark in the taught component are permitted to progress to the final dissertation stage of the programme. They are required to carry out and report an independent research project, following on from the earlier work on the State-of-the-art review and Pre-dissertation projects which will generally be undertaken in similar areas (note, self-defined projects are also possible). The main part of the work will be conducted in the May to August period (with a final submission date in the middle of August). Students are guided in their research by a supervisor with good knowledge of the field under study. The research project and supervisors are allocated at the start of the year by the Programme Director. A successfully completed MSc Dissertation provides clear evidence of a student's ability to conduct and present independent research.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Show adequate knowledge of the field of study and relevant literature; strengthen the student's ability to undertake autonomous engineering work on subjects of which he or she has been taught little; make links between the field of study and cognate sub-disciplines
- Demonstrate skill in organisation of individual research; have developed teamwork organisation and cooperation in developing and executing a work plan
- Gain ability to marshal diverse academic and engineering skills in a problem-solving context;
- Demonstrate skill in presentation, including defence of selected research approaches; demonstrate advanced skill in report preparation, organisation and presentation; develop skills in the defence of a body of work in front of critical assessors
- Show ability to think critically in (as appropriate) evaluation of experimental data, theory, and literature results

The course will be assessed through a submitted dissertation and oral presentation. A fixed portion of the former will be based on "regular reporting" to the supervisor and "achieving a steady rate of progress" in performing the research tasks and will be awarded on the discretion of the supervisor.
The oral presentation will be undertaken as part of the final event of the course, i.e. "Poster Day", to which a wide audience will be invited.
Practical matters - thesis cover sheets are required, and are available from ETO. The dissertation can be printed and bound at the KB copy centre (NB - costs are payable by student). The dissertation should be submitted in hard copy to the ETO (two copies required) and electronically via Learn, both prior to the declared submission deadline.

uCreate KB has two plotters (one loaded with plain paper and the other with glossy paper) located on the first floor of the KB Library Study Centre. The KB Library Study Centre is adjacent to the Noreen and Kenneth Murray Library at King's Buildings. Plots can normally be sent and collected within an hour; the KB copy centre also has a poster printing service but collection may be next day.
