Course description |
This course includes two components, both of which are essential components of the geophysics senior honours year, but which are otherwise independent of each other.
The first component is a geophysics field course. In a normal year (2022-23 onward) the course is run in conjunction with partner universities: the Université Paris-Saclay in France and Universitet Münster in Germany. (Other arrangements were in place during the pandemic.) The trip is held in locations in the UK, Germany and France on a 3-year cycle. The current planned locations are as follows:
2022: Germany (Daun, in the Eifel region, Rheinland-Pfalz)
2023: France (Probably Rochechouart)
2024: England again (Almost certainly Shropshire, Coalbrookdale YHA, field site near Little Wenlock)
2025: Germany again --- site undecided
The field course is usually held in the week containing 1 October; this is either week 2 or week 3 of semester 1. In September 2022 the course will, unusually, be held in week 1 of semester 1.
The second component of the course is a presentation given during week 10 of Semester 2. The subject of the presentation is the project work which the student carried out over the course of the year.

Feedback |
The students get continuous feedback during the field course: in the field on their field skills, and in the late afternoons and evenings when they are doing data processing and interpretation. Staff are always on hand, often teaching but even more often answering questions and giving feedback. Feedback on the report will be given via comments in TurnItIn. Feedback on the presentations is given by all staff present, but also by the rest of the class. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- operate pieces of equipment commonly used for near-surface geophysics.
- understand the value of various geophysical techniques, when each technique should and should not be used, and what it can tell you about the Earth.
- make decisions and interpretations where data is limited and comes from a range of sources.
- work in cross-disciplinary teams (international in most years) to tackle a common problem.
- give conference presentations to a professional standard.
