Summary | Introduction to Professional & Clinical Skills - the course is the first of progressive courses in each year of the BVM&S degree programme.
Professional skills:
The first year course will cover what is expected of a professional, introduce self-appraisal and recording progress, to be continued in future years. The emphasis will be on establishing an understanding of basic professional attributes and behaviour, with a focus on self-appraisal, group working and study skills. Linkages will be made with other courses where aspects of professionalism are highlighted.
Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. GEP classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to the dog. |
Course description |
This course develops the theme of personal and interpersonal skills and communication skills, with an emphasis on inter-personal skills, client perspectives, the human-animal bond and clinical examination of the dog.

1. Attendance - As for all BVM&S courses you are expected to attend all practical/tutorial classes listed for the course. However for the Professional and Clinical Skills course you must attend a minimum of 75% of these classes to pass this course.Please make sure that you sign the attendance sheet for every class to ensure that we have accurate records of your attendance. If for medical reasons you cannot attend you must inform the school office and your Personal Tutor in writing of your illness and produce a Medical Certificate or self-certification if absence is for a week or less.
2. Successful Completion of online Clinical Skills Assessment recorded on Learn. This is available as an open book assessment on a time release basis on Learn and MUST be completed within the designated 2 week window between 5pm on Friday 17th January and 4.30pm on Friday 31st January 2020.
3. Successful Completion of DrugCalc all 4 parts recorded on Learn with 100% correct answers (multiple attempts are allowed for each part). To be completed during academic year 2019-20 but before 4.30pm on Wednesday 6th May 2020
4. Portfolio Submission - A complete portfolio MUST be handed in before 4.30pm on Wednesday 6th May 2020.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the personal attributes and behaviours required of a professional (including the online identity and ability to enter text into online systems for the purposes of assessment, learning and professional activities) and start to develop effective time and stress management, independent learning, study skills and reflective practices.
- Explain the importance of good communication skills and in particular those relating to small groups and recognise the factors that can affect group relationships
- Be able to find, use and critic relevant literature resources and be able to communicate these either in a written format (e.g. essay) or orally (e.g. presentation)
- Demonstrate and verbalise the steps involved in performing basic subjective and physical examinations of a dog.
- Reflect on personal progress in the development of introductory professional and clinical skills and identify strengths and weaknesses.
