Summary | This course will introduce students to global context for food security including: trends on population demographics and their impact on food demand, distributional issues (e.g., affordability and accessibility issues); food supply (availability) and the effect of technology and climate change; importance of trade for food availability and as a stabilisation mechanism. A number of food security methodologies will be used to analyse country and household level vulnerability to food insecurity |

50% Group work assessment - The assignment will consist of an empirical vulnerability analysis applied to a specific country. Each group will be assigned a different country and is expected to prepare an analysis via the development of a wiki this will include peer marking via a WebPA (complete by end week 6) (SQF 11.2, 11.5) LO 3, 4 and 5«br /»
50% Essay Students will be given the choice between at least three topic areas, these will be distributed at the beginning of the course and will focus on current issues in food supply chains. Students will submit a essay of no more than 2000 words (SQF 11.1, 11.3) LO 1 and 2

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have a critical understanding of the global context of food security including its political, economic, social and environmental components. (SQF 11.1)
- Be able to identify the main trade-offs that might exist between food security and other desirable goals.
- Be able to carry out independent and group research on food security issues and report on them. (SQF 11.2, 11.5)
- Be competent in constructing logically sound arguments and analysing scientific theories and data-generating methodologies. (SQF 11.2, 11.3)
- Have practical experience of at least one specialist area (e.g. analysis of food security or food supply chain analysis). (SQF 11.2)
