SummaryIn this course students will explore the nature of preaching in its historical, liturgical, pastoral and public contexts. Theologies of preaching will be examined with particular attention to the place of preaching in churches today. The insights of the 'new homiletic' will be critically evaluated. Through the course students will deepen their critical abilities in interpreting biblical texts for preaching, as well as being able to undertake critical evaluation of the form and the content of preaching.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students should:
- Have a detailed knowledge of contemporary homiletical theories and a developed understanding of history of the practice of preaching.
- Be aware of current issues in hermeneutics as it affects preaching from biblical texts.
- Be able to reflect critically on the practice of preaching as pastoral ministry, as sacrament of the word, as Christian education and as proclamation in contemporary society.
- Be able to evaluate competently preaching form and content.
- Be able to demonstrate, through class presentations, oral communication skills commensurate with the act of preaching.
