SummaryThis course focuses on critiquing the culture of sport by investigating what can be termed the 'dark sides' of sport. Varying aspects of elite, professional, and recreational sport are analysed to provide holistic understandings of sport, thereby critiquing the commonly held positive assumptions made regarding sport. This is done by presenting examples of deviant behaviour, exclusionary actions, and misleading discourses within sport and leisure, with discussions focusing on the different aspects of society, politics, and culture which enable these examples to occur. Students will be required to develop their critical inquiry skills by engaging with these alternative perspectives of sport.
Course description This course will cover a range of social and management issues within sport including counter-culture, issues relating to inclusion and scandals within sport, and incorporating macro, meso and micro-level problems and analysis.
The course will be team-taught where possible, including using guest speakers and staff outside of the core Sport Management team, so teaching is research-informed and led by the most appropriate member(s) of staff. Furthermore, the course will be responsive to current events and engage students in critical discussions of pertinent issues.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse of the culture of professional sport and its effects on those who participate in it
  2. Critically analyse the culture of sport and leisure from participatory/recreational perspectives and its effects on those who participate in it
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of sporting experiences from differing perspectives, including local, national and global contexts, using relevant theories
  4. Engage in critical discussions of how sport can be a positive or negative influence in various contexts
