| Summary | This course builds upon the professional research experiences students gained during second-year, and re-contextualises sport management research within a more academic, scholarly setting.
The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the nature of the research they will be performing for their final-year dissertations, as well as the nature of research utilised in governments and sports organisations. This will involve analyses of the processes of knowledge production, the nature of various methods and methodologies, and the critical evaluation of secondary sources.
Issues addressed will include epistemological assumptions, research strategies, design, and methodologies, as applied to sport management. In the course students will also explore issues of validity and reliability in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. |
| Course description |
The course will include lectures specifically designing a research question, performing secondary research, and the presentation of a dissertation and lectures from specialists from amongst the degree programme staff who will explore the nature and nuances of conducting research using specific research designs and methods.
Students will critically explore epistemological issues in research, the use of literature to inform research, a range of methodologies used in sport management research, approaches to data analysis, ethical considerations in research and the process of writing and presenting research.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of epistemological, ontological, and methodological issues in sport management research.
- Select research strategies and methodologies appropriate to particular research problems.
- Design research tools appropriate to particular research problems.
- Generate a proposal for research for a final-year project with appropriate methodology.
- Demonstrate understanding of the links between theory and method.
