SummaryThis course is aimed at exploring the increasing presence, strategic use and application of technology in sporting contexts. Various industries in the sport sector, such as sports rehabilitation, events management, athlete development, media and journalism, and marketing, plus the influence of commercialisation and communication, are considered, with in-depth analyses of these industries provide a holistic perspective of the full range of impact of technology in sport. Throughout the course discussions are linked with global contemporary trends in sport and technology and how they are defined and translated into practice in a variety of contexts. The opportunities, risks and ethical considerations of using technology in sport will also be explored within the course. During the course, students will be required to engage critically with these dynamic aspects of the sport industry.
Course description This course will cover a range of contemporary issues at macro, meso- and micro-levels of analysis related to the strategic and innovative use of technology in sport, and how this translates into practice within sport mega events, sport organisations, the media, marketing and communication, and athlete development.

The delivery of the course will include guest speakers alongside staff from within the core Sport Management team and the broader Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, thereby ensuring a current, industry-informed and research-led course. In addition, the contemporary nature of the course will ensure that it is responsive to current and emerging trends, and engage in critical discussions with students on pertinent issues accordingly.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse the emergence and evolution of the application of technology in sport
  2. Critically analyse the use and impact of technology in sport in a variety of contexts
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of technological innovations in sport in a global contemporary landscape using appropriate theoretical perspectives
  4. Communicate critical discussions on the contextual application of technology to achieve strategic outcomes
  5. Work with others to communicate change, development and new trends in sport and technology
