| Summary | This course will provide students with an introduction to general theories of social policy and critically assess their relevance to the understanding of national and local government policies for sport. It will provide an understanding of the development and current pattern of national, regional and local government sport and recreation institutions. Indicative content will include an examination of the importance of socio-economic conditions to an understanding of changing rationales for public involvement in the provision of sport and recreation, the role of political ideologies and current policy concerns. It will also involve an international comparative approach. |
| Course description |
The course critically examines key debates within the contemporary politics of sports policy, both in the UK and internationally. In addition to examining the changing nature of the politics of sport, it also requires students to reflect upon what the study of sport tells us about contemporary politics. Issues examined on the course include:
The politics of anti-doping policy in sport;
The politics of sport stadium protests;
The politics of sport for international development;
The politics of sport and regeneration programmes;
The changing governance of national governing bodies of sport;
Sport and soft power;
The politics of sport in a devolved Scotland;
Political ideology and sports policy.
The course has a programme of one-hour weekly lectures with a supporting programme of two-hour seminars held in small groups. The course handbook indicates relevant readings for each seminar
