Summary | This course introduces students to the sociological analysis of sport. It fosters the sociological imagination of students regarding sport. |
Course description |
The focus of this course is to introduce students to the critical analysis of sport and society. Each week's session includes a lecture supplemented by debating point/s and/or case study/ies and links to discuss further. Students are encouraged to develop a critical gaze on some of the implicitly embedded values within sport. Content includes topics such as: body image, class, hyper-conformity, the politics of charities, drug (ab)use and sport.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the complexity of the social significance of sport using appropriate concepts
- Consider the connections between policymakers, facilitators and deliverers of modern sport in contemporary Britain and ideological values.
- Evaluate the impact on sports participation of factors such as access issues, mediatisation and the increasing commercialisation and globalisation of sport.
- Apply appropriate academic practice when reviewing the academic literature on sport and society.
