Summary | The ability to perform, complete, and present research is a crucial element of the BSc Sport and Recreation Management programme. Towards that end, this course is an introduction to the primary themes and processes of sport and recreation management research. It will introduce students to different methodologies used within quantitative and (primarily) qualitative research: how to critically analyse literature, how evidence is gathered, how researchers can generalise conclusions from data, and how to present findings. The aim of this course will be to prepare students for their professional placements, and to provide a context for how academic research can be used within the twenty-first-century workplace. |

Lectures examine the following topics:
What is research?
The research process: identifying research topics and questions
Reviewing the literature
The nature of qualitative research
Qualitative data collection
Qualitative data analysis
The nature of quantitative research
Quantitative data analysis
Questionnaire social survey and designs
Research in the workplace
Ethical issues in social research
Writing a research report and some practical issues
Indicative Content
Understanding research in sport and recreation: why necessary? what are data? what types of research are used in sort and recreation management settings? With examples.
Developing research questions and designing research strategies for projects.
Research methods skills: ¿doing¿ research in a sport and recreation management context.
Reviewing literature.
Qualitative and quantitative methods and data including some of the most popular methods: interviewing and surveys.
Collecting and collating different types of data for a sport/recreation management project.
Report writing.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and discuss the main methods for research in sport and recreation management.
- Differentiate the characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Establish a methodologically sound proposal for a sport and recreation management research project.
- Demonstrate basic practical research skills in selected qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Demonstrate an ability to search for literature in a designated field and evaluate key papers.
