| Summary | This course will consider aspects of selected broad topics in Global Health Epidemiology, especially those related to disease burden and their policy implications. The student will gain some experience of international health issues through consideration of a number of current global health challenges - pandemics, antimicrobial resistance, climate change and health, conflict and health, gender and health. |
| Course description |
This course will be taught entirely by online distance learning, using the virtual learning environment Learn as the delivery platform. Students will work individually and in groups, interacting via discussion boards.
Students will be introduced to key concepts and approaches through a mix of online lectures, activities and key readings.
Students will work in online groups on the global burden of disease and risk factors for a defined condition.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Develop a critical understanding of evolving global burden of disease and related global health challenges; including an understanding of concepts and metrics involved in measuring global burden of disease and critically evaluating a wide range of numerical and graphical data on global burden of disease
- Develop a critical awareness of current issues in global health
- Extend knowledge and thinking on global health challenges
- Communicate to a diverse audience with different areas and levels of knowledge/expertise (in group work)
- Make an identifiable contribution to group work and work collaboratively with a group of peers, taking collective responsibility for the output

During this course students will have to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others. They will learn generic approaches and skills such as classifying information, critical analysis and drawing on different forms of evidence to reach a balanced conclusion. They will engage in groups with a global health assignment and will be asked to present this effectively in a presentation, evidence summary and press statement.
