| Summary | This is the first course that students enrolled on the Master of Public Health (online) programme will take. It will introduce students to the principles, concepts and values that underlie a public health approach to protecting and improving the health of populations, with an emphasis on evidence-based approaches. |
| Course description |
This course is a five week course, taught entirely online. Students will work individually and in groups, interacting via asynchronous discussion boards. As well as introducing students to the basic principles, concepts, values and approaches involved in public health practice and research, the course aims to equip students with the academic skills to be successful online and lifelong learners.

Students will be given formative feedback (peer and tutor) throughout the course on the discussion boards. They will also receive peer and tutor feedback on specific activities in time for this to be useful for the summative assessment. Feedback on the summative assessment will cover topic-specific but also generic academic skills which will be useful for future courses.

Enquiry and lifelong learning: Public health is about identifying problems and developing plans to bring about positive change. This course seeks to inspire students to seek personal and academic learning that makes a positive difference to themselves and to the world around them, inspired by their exposure to world-leading research.
Aspiration and personal development: as this is the first MPH course that students will undertake, they will be completing a personal learning plan to help guide them through the programme.
