Summary	This course will introduce students to basic principles and practice of systematic review methods. As well as offering practical experience of each stage of typical systematic review methods, the course will provide context and rationale for systematic reviews and how they impact on health care decision-making and public health policy.
Course description	Systematic reviews aim to identify, evaluate and summarise the findings of all relevant individual studies, thereby making the available evidence more accessible for decision making. As well as setting out what we know about a particular topic, systematic reviews can also demonstrate where knowledge is lacking. This can then be used to guide future research. This five-week, 10-credit course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your critical understanding of why, when and how to carry out systematic reviews in public health contexts, apply the skills to your own practice, and communicate findings to a variety of audiences. The course is designed round group-based and structured weekly activities that will take you through the core steps involved in the systematic review process. This course will strengthen your literature searching skills which will help you to define the focus of your research. Regardless of whether you are going on to do a dissertation, this course will enable you to become a more independent and skilled consumer of research evidence.
