SummaryThis course reflects the cross-disciplinary nature of the MSc Carbon Management programme. It provides and introduction to the wide range of practical and research projects a Carbon Master may be undertake in an academic or industry setting, and an opportunity to practice skills relevant for successful careers.
Course description The focus of this course is on the first word in its name - 'applied' - to understand how the content you are learning elsewhere in this programme is being put into practice, and to gain practice at doing so.

Applied: In the first half of this course, we will hear from various Carbon Management alumni. They each have a particular story to tell - a 'real-world' example of a problem that they had to address (individually or as part of a team). Like you, our alumni come from different backgrounds, have had very different experiences, and work in (and with) a variety of industries. They personify the breadth of roles a Carbon Master may choose from upon completion of the programme.

Carbon: Each of the problems presented by our guest speakers are in some way related to carbon and/or the climate. Some of those links may be less obvious that others. They range from behaviour change to technology to business strategy, and beyond.

Methods: In these seminars, the speaker will walk us through how they approached their particular problem; what worked, what didn't, and (most importantly) why. From origination to scoping to methods to output. Through them, we will begin to appreciate there is a multitude of ways to address almost any problem - many will be 'wrong', but there is also (usually) more than one 'right' way to do so.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation (PGGE11126) AND Business and Climate Change (ECNM11033) AND Carbon Economics (ECNM11034)

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Students MUST have passed at least 2 of the pre-requisite courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Project design: understand how to break down a problem into its component parts.
  2. Project management: plan and carry out a project to resolve a practical problem.
  3. Communication: effectively engage their audience, using various modes of communication
  4. Analysis: creatively use available literature and information to craft novel approaches to solving a problem.
