SummaryThis course considers in depth modern digital manufacturing processes, in particular additive manufacture (AM) and computer aided manufacture (CAM). Typically, both AM and CAM begin with a computer model of the intended geometry, but there are a range of distinct techniques available to the manufacturing engineer in order to realise this design.
Course description The course will be developed to facilitate hybrid teaching and will compromise a series of 6 x 3-hour workshop sessions that will encourage student-centred learning. A combination of technical lectures, guest speakers from industry and practical manufacturing experience will be employed to allow students to make informed decisions regarding the selection and effective implementation of such manufacturing approaches.

Workshop 1: Introduction - additive and CAM manufacturing options
Workshop 2: Additive Manufacture
Workshop 3: Metal Additive Manufacture
Workshop 4: Materials' performance: prediction and control
Workshop 5: Design for Manufacture
Workshop 6: Numerical control of machine tools
These workshops will be designed so that they can be taught online if necessary.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Recognise a range of AM/CAM processes and critically examine the constraints and benefits of adopting a particular approach;
  2. Discuss the links between manufacturing and materials' performance with a view to optimisation;
  3. Appreciate the principals of design for manufacture with AM/CAM;
  4. Generate numerical control programs for manufacture.
