Summary	This course will give an introduction to the applications of engineering within medicine.
Course description	This will be a wide ranging course which will provide participants with knowledge of the essentials of musculoskeletal systems of the body and the principal biomedical devices developed for these systems. Current best practise and future developments will be studied with particular focus on where engineering can make a particular impact

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to: Identify the main components of the musculoskeletal system, their physiological function, and physical properties; Give an overview of the common injuries and diseases associated with these systems, their geographical distribution, societal impact and the value of the market for interventions addressing these complaints; Describe an engineering intervention made within each of these systems, showing an appreciation of the required functionality, operating environment and design constraints; Show a knowledge of biomaterials, their engineering properties and range of uses; Show an appreciation of the legal and ethical issues surrounding the application of engineering in medicine.
