SummaryAfter two introductory tutorials, the details of the project will be largely developed by the student in consultation with their project supervisor, who will provide suggestions and background reading.
Course description The aim of this course is to develop generic research skills that can be deployed in academic or commercial environments. Students will demonstrate their ability to develop interesting concepts into research or development proposals.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. critically evaluate research literature appropriate for their project subject, and use existing research to design their experiments.
  2. develop a structured research proposal that puts the project in scientific context and outlines the contributions that the project will make to the field.
  3. discuss and evaluate research proposals with particular reference to key hypotheses and methodological approaches.
  4. plan a project timeline, taking into account limitations imposed by their own time, and develop contingency plans for possible issues.
  5. deliver a detailed and balanced report on a research topic.

Graduate Attributes and Skills By the end of this course, the MSc student will be able to:
- Critically evaluate research literature appropriate for their project subject.
- Use existing research literature to create hypotheses, and justify experimental design choices for testing those hypotheses.
- Develop a structured research proposal.
- Outline project/research management issues.
