The aims are to write a preview based on the project title that summarises not only the recent advances made but the controversies of past and present, which leads to a key hypothesis relevant to your dissertation. In doing so one should develop an accurate description of current wisdom in the field.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites Students MUST also take: General Neuroscience (NEBM10028) AND Neuroscience Project (NEBM10005) AND Neuroscience Synoptic Examination (NEBM10019)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Only open to students in the final year of the Neuroscience Honours Programme (BSc, BMedSci and BSc Vet Sci).

Feedback Feedback will be provided while the student is still at an early stage in their project. The student will be expected to provide and present a brief draft of their project preview and will receive general feedback from the course organiser/ course team and/or peers. A further draft, focussing primarily on the science they have reviewed and the conclusions drawn from research papers, will then be prepared and sent to the supervisor. The supervisor or group member will then meet with the student and discuss the draft and provide feedback. This feedback will help towards the dissertation project in Semester 2.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate the advanced development and application of literature-searching skills through the identification of key, discipline-specific, knowledge from a range of original sources
  2. demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of key controversies of the past and present that directly contribute to our current understanding of the particular research field
  3. discuss and critically evaluate different experimental methodologies that have expanded our knowledge in the specific field of research
  4. critically interpret and draw together all relevant information that leads to the formulation of a novel research hypothesis related to their dissertation project

Graduate Attributes and Skills This course is a compulsory part of the senior honours programme in Neuroscience and contributes to the development of the following set of graduate attributes and skills:

1: Knowledge and understanding
Graduates will develop an in-depth understanding of the areas described by their preview dissertation. above, including a significant amount of independent reading.
Graduates will be expected to build on their prior learning to demonstrate an ability to critically appraise the evidence used to guide research in the field.
2: Practice ¿ Applied knowledge, skills & understanding
Students will apply their specific knowledge and understanding of Neuroscience to plan and present a hypothesis-led research question in the form of a written dissertation.
3: Generic cognitive skills
Graduates will have demonstrated an ability to identify, define, conceptualise and critically analyse complex scientific problems.
Graduates will be expected to critically review their knowledge, skills and thinking on the material covered, and synthesize this with evidence from the literature.
4: Communication, ICT & numeracy skills
Students will be expected to communicate professionally with peers, senior colleagues and the lay public.
Students will learn to present information about specialised topics to informed audiences, using appropriate ICT applications for this purpose.
Graduates will demonstrate an ability to interpret, use and evaluate numerical and graphical data in their appraisal of the relevant literature.
5. Autonomy, accountability & working with others
Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate autonomy and inititative by planning and writing their project preview dissertation above, including a significant amount of independent reading.
Students will interact with their supervisor in the planning of the preview dissertation thereby enhancing the development of professional working relationship skills.
