SummaryThe course will consider the nature of curricula, curriculum design and its impact upon teaching and learning. Theoretical underpinnings will be considered and their application in practice discussed.

Evidence from the literature and relevant policy will support learners' analysis of their practice within their context. For example:
- International policy, recommendations and guidelines (eg WHO, European guidelines)
- Recommendations and guidelines at national level (E.G. GMC, NMC, GDA, Royal Colleges, and government agencies).
- The explicit and hidden curriculum
- Educational theories and current practices (eg constructive alignment)

Participants are encouraged to reflect upon current practice to explore the strengths and limitations of educational approaches such as competency-based education.
Course description Online environments are used for the teaching, learning and assessment of all courses on the programme. This includes Microsoft Teams for regular, synchronous conversations, a virtual learning environment with discussion forums for asynchronous dialogue, and other interactive visual, audio, textural and graphical modes of communication.

Additional Information (Assessment) Students are expected to submit a workbook containing a short formative assignment mid-course. this is for feedback only (no marks) and supports the students to develop ideas for their summative assignment.

There is a summative written assignment of around 3,000-4,000 words.
Feedback Feedback is generated on an ongoing basis through interactive live and asynchronous discussion, and review of formative assignments. Tutors will also provide individual, detailed comments on the summative end of course assignment.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Describe the key pedagogic features of a teaching activity and its context.
  2. Illustrate the impact on a curriculum of context (social/political/professional) and the role of stakeholders.
  3. Analyse a curriculum with reference to a range of design models.
  4. Assess a teaching activity in relation to its alignment with associated curricula, learning outcomes and assessment.
  5. Describe how a range of practical and logistical factors influence the realisation of a curriculum.
