Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Specialist integrative and evidence-based knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of microbial community metagenomics and of the strategies involved in approaches employing both PCR- amplified gene fragments and shotgun metagenomics
  2. Specialist integrative knowledge and critical understanding of the workflow involved in DNA sequence filtering, noise removal, OTU generation and taxonomic classification using sequences derived from PCR amplicons
  3. Specialist integrative knowledge and critical understanding of the keys steps involved in DNA sequence assembly and gene annotation using sequences derived from shotgun metagenomic strategies
  4. Practice, general cognitive skills, and ICT in a creative way, the principal skills involved in manipulating DNA sequence datasets derived from metagenomic strategies using computers
  5. Practice, general cognitive skills, and ICT the use of computer programs to execute a variety of planned analyses in several areas relating to metagenomics
